Light and love in your heart toward others, are the best Christmas displays.

It's rare today to see shoppers who are happy and courteous. It seems that the overall mood of hurried greed can zap any friendliness you left home with.

The winter chill outside will also zap any warmth you had before you opened the front door, except for the layers of clothing and coats gloves and scarves worn. You know the cold is waiting there, so you prepare.

Maybe if we knew the "cold" of a rushed and crowded store was out there, and prepared accordingly we wouldn't be effected by it so quickly either.

By preparing I mean wrap yourself in God's love by thinking on how much he loves you. What a sacrifice He made. Not just for you, but for all of us.....In that while we were yet sinners.

Meditate and read about the fruits of the spirit, and let them layer your mind and heart with love, joy, peace, longsuffering, temperance, gentleness, kindness, goodness, meekness.

Then surely the peace which passes all understanding will keep your hearts and minds full of light and love. Just as a beautiful lighted Christmas display is attractive, your attitude will be too. A light in a dark world.

Today, I'm thankful for this time of year, a time when we can all pause, reflect and be thankful. Remember to draw loved ones near even while you're in the kitchen bustling about preparing the meal. Give thanks for all you have. Look around you. Don't think of what you need, and don't have, See what is already there, and be grateful. Thank you Lord for the Thanksgiving season.

Today I'm thankful for transportation. My van is not running right now. I'm having to share hubby's car, and it's not easy. I'm thankful that we'll soon have mine running with the Lords help though. Thank you Lord for a way to go.

Weeks 11 12 & 13 of 7th Grade Homeschool

In my life this week…
We're homeschooling of course and cleaning a lot. Our Thanksgiving meal will be at a relatives house, but we decorate for Christmas and put up our tree the Friday after. I like to have everything ready.
This coming week we'll get the tree, and ornaments down, buy some hot chocolate, and break out "White Christmas" maybe some seasonal cartoons, for movie night.

In our homeschool this week…
We've almost finished with the "percents" unit. We've been on it for all of November.
Our memory verse this week was ~But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57~

Thanksgiving Countdown: Day 6

It's now six days till Thanksgiving. Instead of just going through the season hurriedly, I'm trying to take the time to reflect, and to be thankful for the blessings God has provided.

Today, I'm thankful for what I wear. Though they may not be the best or most expensive clothes and shoes, I am grateful for them just the same. Thank you Lord for the clothes we wear.

Today I'm thankful to live in a land where we can teach our children. I am SO appreciative of the chance to homeschool. To instill Christian values in my kids along with academic skills. In my life this week…
We took our daughter to a couple of "fall fest" get togethers, this week. This weekend we had a little nephew over. Funnest of all, we attended a big ole wiener roast with my sister, and her family. What's not to love about autumn?

In our homeschool this week…
Our memory verse was Phi. 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

This week I mostly worked on costumes, and hauling, picking up after, and feeding kids. Gonna try and organize my kitchen this week. Yes... TRY

I’m grateful for… Health, and time with family and friends.

In my life this week…
We attended the funeral of a friend, who moved from a body laden with pain and cancer to a heavenly one, that will never be hurt again.

In our homeschool this week…
Our memory verse was Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

In Math: We're finishing decimals, This week we rounded off decimals, changed fractions to decimals, and worked with ratios and proportions. We started Friday with percents.

The word of God. This week I am especially motivated by 1st Corinthians chapter 13.

My favorite thing this week was…
Spending quality time with my husband and children.

Things I’m working on…
I'm feeling crafty because of the cooler weather. I am reluctant to "drag" out anything to start on, for I've been unable to settle on any one thing especially interesting.

I’m cooking…
Homemade soup and cornbread. Later this week, chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and white gravy.

Snowmen Movie Review

I just watched Homeschool.com's sneak peak of the new movie "Snowmen", which opens in select theaters October 21, 2011

In the movie Snowmen (2011), there was some language that we as parents
didn't find appropriate. It was filled with bullying, cruelty, gross and shocking
incidents. Way too much violence for our family.

I personally thought the entire theme of the movie was way too strong for younger kids, and too intense to be called a family movie. Definately should be at the very "least" a pg 13.

I was glad that my kids weren't watching. In a nutshell basically, you go through an hour and 20 minutes of all of the above, to hear them slip in a little message at the end, about how it's not what you do, but how you do it, that matters most.

Overall I would not recommend this movie.

In my life this week…

My hubby had a birthday! The kids helped make a cake, and give him a party. Fun stuff!!

In our homeschool this week…

In Bible: We studied Jacob and Esau. Our memory verse for this week is Matt 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you. We memorize one scripture a week. Read more about that here.

In Abeka Math: We reviewed fractions, mixed numbers, improper fractions, changing them back and forth and reducing fractions to the simplest form.

In Art: We're still studying color, primary, secondary and now complementary colors.

Week 3 of 7th Grade Homeschool

Aw September!! ~We're loving these cooler temps.
We had a homeschooled cousin for company part of this week. It was pretty fun. He wasn't too interested in schooling the first day though. Then on the second day I found some schoolwork on his grade level, that had to do with football, and boy did He jump on that. It's amazing how interest can boost learning potential.

In Bible: We studied Abraham. Our memory verse for this week is Psa. 34:7 The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him and delivereth them. We memorize one scripture a week. Read more about that here.

In Abeka Math: We reviewed prime and composite numbers.

In Spelling: We're studying prefixes, base words, suffixes, and their meanings.

In History: We're studying Arkansas history, and interesting facts. This week we studied the Native American tribes that first inhabited Arkansas.

In Art: We're studying color, how to get the secondary colors by using different mixing methods.

Week 2 of 7th Grade Homeschool

Our second week. It's getting fun. We're so excited it's finally September!

In Bible: We reviewed Noah's Ark. Our memory verse for this week is James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. We memorize one scripture a week. Read more about that here.

In Abeka Math: we reviewed multiplication, division, writing and reading long numbers.

In Spelling: We're studying the six types of syllables.

In PE: We spend 20 minutes moving. A few minutes of that is spent on a special locomotor activity. Our locomotor movements this week were jogging, hopping, skipping, and bearcrawling. ...Let me tell ya, it "aint" easy on the teacher either.

In History: We're studying Arkansas history, and interesting facts. She worked some more on her Arkansas book. We even learned some things about our own city that we didn't know.

In Art: We're studying color, and about how to use the primary and secondary colors.

In Music: We had piano, bass guitar, and drum lessons.

I guess my personal favorite this week was science...
In Science: We studied structural engineering. We built a bridge from paper, and discovered how the shape of material determines it's strength. Fun stuff!

Bible Stories and Memory Verses

BIBLE

What we plan to do in our Bible time this year, is to go back over the basic stories, apply them to daily life by discussion and resources found.

We begin usually here at Garden of Praise. Once there click on "Children's Bible Lessons" (about the second link down on the left I believe.)

She has short stories that you can read or listen to. There are several activities for each story. Some even have games.

Then you can test your knowledge. It even grades your tests and records your scores.

MEMORY VERSES

We are having one Memory Verse per week this year. One thing I'm trying, is putting the verse into a picture, then setting it as our desktop background/wallpaper on our computer. That way we're seeing it constantly when using the computer, and even when walking by it.

It seemed to work very well this week. We say it a couple of times through the day.

Another thing we've tried is to have her write where the current memory verse is found, on her school work when she puts her name and date on them. For instance this weeks was Psa. 4:8.

She wrote it several times this week and in the process, knows not only the memory verse well , but the location in the Bible also.

Week 1 of 7th Grade Homeschool

Our first week went well. Our days are Mon. - Thu. with an occasional Friday. That works well for us. We always start with prayer, Bible study and memory verse review. Then onto other subjects.
Here's some of what we covered this week.

In Bible: we studied the seven days of creation. Our memory verse for this week is Psa. 4:8. I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety. We're doing one scripture a week. Read more about that here.

In 7th grade Abeka Math: we reviewed place value, addition, and subtraction.

In Spelling: we reviewed vowel combinations (diphthongs) consonant combinations (digraphs)

In PE: We are into the locomotor movements. (It's still so hot in our area we are actually having PE indoors.) We do go out for some fresh air and sunshine the second part of the day though.

In Nature Studies: Lead by her interests, We're studying the mint growing in our yard. She's done some collecting, sketching, journaling, and made some mint tea.

In History We're studying Arkansas history and interesting facts.

In Art We're studying color. The color wheel, colors that are cool, colors that are warm, and block lettering.

In Music: We had piano and drum lessons

In Science: We're studying the sea. We're also trying an egg experiment found here.

Nature Studies

With summer in full swing it's hard to believe that in just a month it'll be time to register for another year of homeschool.

Already I've begun to plan our curriculum, and make up our 2011-2012 calendar. One thing we plan to incorporate this year are Nature Studies.

My daughter is a seventh grader this year, so it will be more challenging to keep her interest. Here are some links we've found that may prove to be beneficial. All free as usual. Any helpful advise in the comments would be appreciated. lol

Homeschool Testing

We're in what I call review mode. That's right before our studies are put on hold to kick in the test prep. Yeah it's that time again.

We're actually going to try testing at home this year through Seton. I've never done it before. We've always tested through the local homeschool group. The homeschool group's test is actually much shorter than the Seton, and doesn't cost. The Seton test will cost us 25 bucks.

So why test at home? Well the answer lies mostly in the fact that I'll be able to see how she's doing in more subject areas since the test covers more. The results come in faster too ....they say.

There are other reasons as well. Like for instance, my little gal is NOT a morning person. A lot of our homeschool group are farm families, so they like to get it done early. I feel like she'll be able to do her best if she sleeps a little later.

If you read my blog you know that I have a son with Downs. He gets up pretty early. He is fine as long as we're at home, but if you get him up early, and leave the house, be ready for tummy trouble. Not fun. Especially away from home. He's fine if you wait until a little later in the day though. Go figure.

So in short, testing at home may work out great for us.

Valentine's Day

Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated on the 14th of February. It's named after one or more early Christian martyrs with the name of Valentine. Today It is primarily celebrated as a day for sweethearts and loved ones. According to Wikipedia, "The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished."

One traditionally shows affection by giving flowers, candy, and or Valentine cards.
Valentine's Day is a special time for a gal to show her guy she cares, and vice versa.
It can also be a special time to show your love to family and friends. It doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. As with all gestures of kindness it's the thought that counts, and of course the attitude with which you give.

Hand made paper cards are a great way to put your feelings into words. Hearts and doilies on homemade crafts add to the beauty of the occasion. Be sure to let little ones get in on the fun and creativity.

Have a little family party, bake heart shaped cookies or just buy special pink and white snacks from the store. Make mailboxes from paper plates or old shoe boxes, and put pre-made cards inside to be read together at a certain time on the big day.

Pick a good old sentimental family movie. Go to the local library and stock up on valentine stories for all ages then snuggle in the family room for a good read aloud time of togetherness. Whatever you plan, make sure that each one feels loved and special when the day is done.

Happy New Year

At Celebrations there are lots of ideas for a family friendly new years eve party. ...OR....Ring in the new year with your own family traditions. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Craft. Make party hats, shakers, even placemats or napkin rings. Get everyone in on the fun. Have everyone color a little new years picture, then save them in a folder to look at next year.
Watch a movie. Break out one of your family's favorites or even try out a family friendly new one. Don't forget the popcorn!
Play Games. Play a board game, cards or even a video game, as long as it's together.
Read. Have, Mom, Dad or an older child read a new or old favorite book aloud.
Talk. Talk about the future... Make some resolutions.
Sing. If you feel comfortable singing, then have a family sing along. The old hymns can be a great comfort for the future. One of my favorites, goes...

Many things about tomorrow
I don't seem to understand,
but I know who holds tomorrow,
and I know who holds my hand.

Finally our favorite...

Pray in the new year. ... a little before the new year strikes or right after, join hands with family members and all together, or individually, pray. It's a good way to voice concerns about the future, offer praise for blessings you've already received, or ask for guidance in future decisions. I sometimes write my new years prayer in a journal. It's a good feeling to know that your first action of the new year was to pray. An old radio program called Family Theater, used to always say. "The family that prays together, Stays together." Don't forget to share a favorite scripture before bed.

May you walk in his ways, and be in his blessings in the coming new year.

We've had a good week, with little interruptions. There were a few of those annoying survey calls, but other than that it's been great. We're thankful for that.The Lord has been good to us this week.

Weekly Wrap-Up

We're on our 11th week of school. I have a 6th grader this year. She's a joy to teach, and this is our first time to participate in Weekly Wrap-Up ~Thanks Kris .

We use primarily Abeka curriculum. Though we incorporate lots of other resources. I love free resources from online, so you'll always find freebies here.

In Language, we covered prepositional phrases, and diagraming sentences.

In Science we finished a chapter on Mammals, and will take the chapter test next week.

In Health we're studying the importance of eating healthy, and how to check labels, as well as plan healthy snacks.

In McGraw-Hill Spectrum Phonics, we're on roots, (a word part) not to be confused with root words. ie the root spec meaning to see, look, or watch, could be used to form the word spectacular, meaning something wonderful to "look" at.

In keeping with the season this month we're reading Stories of the Pilgrims written by Margaret B. Pumphrey. We actually have the book, but you can read it free online here. I highly recommend reading it.

We use Abeka Math. For the past few weeks we've been on fractions, advancing then to decimals, and we're now on percents. This week we've covered,
* introduction to percents,
* subtracting from 100%,
* interchanging fractions,
* percents and decimals, and
* finding the percent of a number.
Kayla accidentally invented a new word this week ....fractiomals. We had a good laugh.

We're incorporating Home Economic lessons also, our favorite site for this is, Future Christian Homemakers. There are free pdf lessons. Kayla also helped make dinner tonight.

That about "wraps" up our homeschool week.

We've recently discovered, a site called My Test Book. You just sign up for free, and use it. There are printable, and online tests for grades 1-8
Areas covered are Math, Science, Reading & Grammar, and General Knowledge.
There's also an option to make your own tests, and questions. You can schedule weekly tests for regular practice. You can also create classes and student accounts. They boast of being a 100% FREE website. Give it a try!

The Pow-Wow

We went to the Cherokee National Holiday Pow-Wow in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. It was beautiful. The competitions were so entertaining. Mikayla really got into the whole atmosphere. It was a great learning experience. We got a little chilly, though. Luckily we all had jackets in the van. Fall is in the air.

Bible Resources

We're actually gearing up for homeschool 2010-2011. We usually start the day with prayer, and a Bible story. This year we plan to go through the Bible chronologically with a once or twice a week Bible story, then to supplement on the other days with devotionals. One sight I plan to make use of is CBH ministries. It has several different resources. Check it out. What Bible study resources do you use?

Fun Summer Ideas

Summer is in full swing. Complete with friends, family, lemonade, and sunshine. The sun can be so wonderful, but everyone knows the danger of too much of a good thing. In the recent past we were encouraged to slather on the sunscreen. A new study has recently found though, that particular sunscreen ingredients may be linked to increased risks of skin cancer. Read more here. So what are we to do? Our plan is just to limit time spent in the sun, and to avoid those midday hours when the sun is at it's peak.

On a more positive note, We have some fun things our family likes to do outside when the weather permits.

A picnic in a shaded area is always nice. Visit an area park. Usually late afternoon is best when slides and swings are cooler. Playing with the water hose is always a winner in the summer too.

And when it's just too hot outside, there's always, family movie time. Break out the popcorn, and a favorite kid movie. You can even rent a new release.

Make some lemonade, grab some snacks, and get out the board games. Make it fun! Get excited when you win. LOL

There's always the computer too. Here at Kaboose are some fun summer games to keep you busy till it's cool enough to get outside. We've recently found a couple of game sites that let you play full versions FREE with advertisements in the middle of the games. Really! One is Most Fun, and the other is iwin. Try them out.

Whatever you do, stay cool, be thankful, spend time with family, stay safe, and have a great summer.

What We're Learning This Summer

Though we officially are taking a summer break from homeschooling, we still have story, and devotional times. Right now our daily stories are taken from (Dusty's Beary Tales) Building Character with Bible Virtues. It was written by "Aunt Ruthie" over at Sugar Pie Farmhouse. We're only on the third story, but so far it's been awesome. My daughter really likes it. She gets her little study bible and marks the verses. We only mark in light pencil, but I feel it's important for her to mark what she likes to read and make notes.

Since summer is in full swing, and fourth of July celebrations are around the corner I've decided to add a little "americana" to our routine. We'll be learning, or relearning some old and new songs about America. Our beloved nation. What's the first one on the list? God Bless America, by Irving Berlin. I feel that it's very important to teach our children to love this country that God has blessed us with.

Good Family Time

We're headed out to Silver Dollar City tomorrow in Branson MO. Peach is excited. My sister, and brother in law are going with us. Fizz, is trying to back out. He gets tired, walking so much. Hopefully it will be educational for Peach.

It's good for families to get out, and enjoy other places. It's good bonding time. It's especially good for homeschool families. Make it fun for them, and exciting. These moments go by too quickly.

When you are out on the road it's stressful sometimes. Make that extra effort not to take it out on your kids by being uptight, or even grumpy. Make it a happy, stress free time for them. They are making memories for a lifetime. Let them remember that you were always fun to be around.

Happy Mother's Day

A Mother's Good Works

Hebrews 10:24 says... And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.

Sometimes as a wife and mother we see our tasks as mundane. We tend to see washing dishes, doing laundry, etc as not so important. The truth is we are serving God as we do this. It is part of our work for God. These things are part of our good work.

Coloss 3:23 speaks to servants, and we are all servants of God when we serve and take care of our families. It says...
And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men

Ecclesiast. 9:10 says Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might...

I'd like to encourage you. as you do daily chores, do it with a heart focused on God. For you are doing it for him.

In 1st Timothy we are encouraged to "adorn ourselves" with good works.

Psalms 90:17 says And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.

I pray that God will establish the work of my hands, whether giving a hug, or putting on a band-aid, or just mopping the floor. Let us do all for his glory and in his service.

My obvious would have to be, God, Jesus,my kids, husband, etc. but aside from that...

I would have to say I love...

1. Being able to homechool my kids. The reasons are many.

2. Coffee.....Folgers. Black even!

3. Reading, I love mysteries, as long as they're clean.

4. Simple furniture, ie Amish style.

5. Being home. I am a home body if ever there was one.

An Extra Week to Study

I posted earlier about our homeschool testing date. Turns out I had it wrong. I looked online the night before to make sure of the time, and found out that I had written it on my calendar wrong! It's actually the 13th instead of the 5th. Hey it happens! LOL
SO.. we have an extra week to study. Peach was all ready to get it over with though. Sorry Peach.

Our Spring Break

We went to Silver Dollar City over the weekend. It was really fun. A little too much walking for Fizz though. LOL
We saw (part) of a Lincoln Brewster concert. It was rained out after the third song. What there was of it was super though. The group Luminate opened for him. They were good.
Next was "Christian" comedian Doug Compton. I'm sure he means well. Parts of his routine was funny, but a lot of his material was very off-color. Especially for kids. Being young christians weekend, I found it especially inappropriate. He said some words we're not allowed to say. One thing He made reference to, I'm embarrassed to write. It was sad, honestly If I had known it would be like that we would have went after his routine. I couldn't recommend taking kids to see him. Let's pray God will help him clean it up. He seems to have lots of potential.
Over all we had a safe trip, and a great time, thank God. There wasn't enough time in one day to do all we wanted to do, but we got season tickets, so hopefully we'll be going back soon.

Homeschool Science Fair

Today we went to the Homeschool Science Fair, in our area. Peach didn't have an entry yet, We just went to look it over, and get ideas for next year. It was really impressive. They had many displays. Among them were included, a Laura Ingalls display, one on Annie Oakley, one about skin, there were coyote, and skunk displays, and many more.
We were on vacation and a little too busy to stay for the judging and awards, but it was a nice experience. Homeschool kids are pretty cool. :)

Sping Break / Homeschool Testing

Spring Break is coming next week. At least Mr. Gs Spring break, but due to homeschool testing coming up April 5th, Peach won't get hers yet. At least not all of it. We may take off a couple of days to go somewhere as a family.
I'll admit we're having to work on waking up earlier for the test too. We're not normally dressed and leaving by 7:30 AM like we'll have to be that day.

Our Homeschool Week

Peach has been recuperating from sickness so we haven't schooled this week like usual. I don't know if her tummy trouble was a virus or food related. It was pretty severe though. She is just now getting her appetite back good.
Her Mpact group Valentine party got postponed because of snow. We actually had it the 17th which was fine with Peach since she was really sick on Valentine's Day.
Here's some of what we'll be doing next week when she's better.

In Math...
We had already begun a decimal review. Peach had been reviewing place values of decimals, how to read decimals, and changing decimals to fractions.
Next week we'll begin changing fractions to decimals, and review adding and subtracting decimals. From there, we'll go on to multiplication and devision of decimals, as well as continuing to memorize her multiplication tables.

In addition to math,
She'll also be studying the winter Olympics. She will have spelling, penmanship, science and health.

Our homeschool Valentine party was yesterday. There were BUNCHES of kids there. I was surprised.
There were a lot of games for all ages too. The little girls played together in one area, and the big girls in another, and the boys in yet another.
There were lots of Valentine snacks, and of course there was friendly chat from the mothers. Peach enjoyed it a lot.

Friend Makin Monday-Super Bowl

This week FMM is about the Super Bowl
Amber asks....

Did you watch the Super bowl?
Sort of. We ran in and watched when the guys would start hollering.

If so, who were you rooting for?
The Saints (cause that's who my dh, and all our guys were rooting for)

If not, what did you do instead?
My sister and I actually went shopping for a bit, and worked on some jackets for our kids club.

Where did you watch it/not watch it?
My Sister's house on the big screen. (actually the guys did, we mostly listened from the kitchen.)

What did you eat?
Everything... My sister goes all out on Sunday, and has lots of company. There was Barbqued pork, baked butternut squash, macNcheese, greenbeans, we had Roast beef, carrots & potatoes too like Amber. For dessert there was pecan pie, and chocolate cake, and of course sweet iced tea to drink.

Favorite superbowl commercial?
Focus on the Family's Tebow and Mom & Denny's Grand Slam (screaming chickens)

Least favorite?
Blckbrry's

What did you think of the half time show?
I did actually watch part of it. My hubby was impressed at the speed with which they set up and tore down. I thought the lights were neat. I don't care for anything, but gospel, so the music didn't do much for me.

Who do you wish would have been the halftime show?
Lincoln Brewster would be awesome.

Can you believe it's February already? My daughter asked me "Is that REALLY the way you spell February? I said, "Yep, it's a little weird, but that's it." She loves to proof-read, and she thought there was a misprint on our calendar. I guess it's time to go back over the months in our spelling.

Tomorrow is Groundhog day. A groundhog is a rodent also known as a woodchuck. It is said that if the little fellow comes out of his burrow, and fails to see his shadow, then spring is on it's way, but if he DOES see it, then he goes back into his burrow and it's winter for six more weeks. YIKES I hope he doesn't see it!

Winter-A Time for Home

It's supposed to turn cold here. I'm a SUMMER person. I thrive on that 90 to 100 degree heat we have. I don't do well in single digit weather. SO I suppose I'll just find comfort where I can, snuggling in a blanket, by the fire, with the little ones. We'll have to break out the board games. I'm very thankful for our home. Though not as magnificent as some, it welcomes us, it's pretty warm, and filled with love, and that's what matters.

This song has been on my mind. So I looked up the lyrics. You can read about it on Wikipedia here, and complete lyrics are here.

It's basis in the word comes from these scriptures...
Matthew Chapter 6:26 26 Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Chapter 10:29-31. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

It was written by Civilla Durfee Martin, a Canadian, born 21 Aug 1869. She married Dr. Walter Martin, an evangelist. This is her account of the writing of the song:

Early in the spring of 1905, my husband and I were sojourning in Elmira, New York. We contracted a deep friendship for a couple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doolittle—true saints of God. Mrs. Doolittle had been bedridden for nigh twenty years. Her husband was an incurable cripple who had to propel himself to and from his business in a wheel chair. Despite their afflictions, they lived happy Christian lives, bringing inspiration and comfort to all who knew them. One day while we were visiting with the Doolittles, my husband commented on their bright hopefulness and asked them for the secret of it. Mrs. Doolittle’s reply was simple: "His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me." The beauty of this simple expression of boundless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imagination of Dr. Martin and me. The hymn "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" was the outcome of that experience. -- Civilla Martin

I'm so very thankful that He watches over me. It makes all the difference, and it's true, He is a constant friend.

Staying Comfy :January

Winter is the season in which people try to keep the house as warm as it was in the summer, when they complained about the heat. ~Author Unknown

I am guilty of this. I am SO cold natured. I freeze constantly. Here's something we do to give us that warm comfort feeling.

A big bowl of hot steaming soup always makes you feel better, and there are so many varieties to choose from.
Our favorite is Potato Soup.

Now,... I can cook alright....but I guess I cook a little on the lazy side.... If there's a shortcut, I take it! For instance here's my potato soup recipe...
I make it the easy way. I bake some potatoes in the microwave, and while they're cooking,I get my pot ready with some milk, butter, and spices, . Then at the end, I peel and mash the potatoes. I then add them to the soup, along with some shredded cheddar cheese, and let it simmer. The spices I use are usually; garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. "Nature's Seasoning" is good in it too. The amounts are up to you. Spicy or bland? Thick-N-hearty or thin-N-soupy?

Of course I "make" biscuits to go with it. I cheat there too. I make "Bisquick Complete" cheese garlic biscuits. (In a yellow 7.5 oz pkg.) Just add water, and bake. They're ready in 15 minutes, and they are super! The only drawback,- they have a little transfat. There's no cholesterol though.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

This my first time to participate. Hope I've got everything right.

Outside my window... It's VERY cold, frosty, and still.

I am thinking... How that I can't rest well, and how I hear every noise when hubby leaves before daylight.

I am thankful for... health and strength.

I am wearing... Slacks, a turtle neck, and outer shirt and socks.

I am remembering... How nice it was when hubby worked evenings.

I am going... To stay in today by the fire, where we'll have our homeschool. We plan to make a trip to the library later this week.

I am currently reading... The Bible, and The Hollow Tree Snowed In Book with my kids and hubby.

I am hoping... For a warming trend in the weather. I know it won't be spring for a while, but I'd enjoy some temperatures above the teens.

On my mind... Checking email, and getting last minute things done for homeschool later.

Noticing that... My daughter left a few books on the table from last night.

Pondering these words... "The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it." Proverbs 10:22

From the kitchen... Few books on the table, few dishes in the sink, and a floor that will be swept and mopped later in the day, (If the Lord be willing.)

Around the house... Keeping wood on the fire, the dog taken out, kids schooled, and fed, hubby encouraged.

One of my favorite things~ Sitting around the table with my family to a good homecooked meal.

Friend Makin Mondays --hairstyles

At aefilkins today the topic is ... haircuts/hairstyles.

My hair is about shoulder length, I'll probably get it cut a little shorter this spring. I'm so cold right now I actually wish I had more hair, but IF I did get a cut it would probably be something like the third picture down in Amber's post.
One good thing about getting a cut in the winter is that if you don't like it you can always hide it under a hat.

Yesterday

We had a trying day yesterday. Fizz was sick with a virus. He couldn't hold anything down from 12:00 noon until about 3:00 AM. He finally got some sleep at around 4:00AM this morning thank the Lord. He's doing well today. We had a lot of people praying for him. Now if all the rest of us can stay well we'll be doing alright.

The puppy didn't get to play as much as usual yesterday, and today she has just gone wild. She ran so much, and got so tired she's just exhausted.

Peach has some Christmas money that's burning a hole in her pocket, and she wants to go spend it. Hopefully we'll get to take her shopping in a couple of days.

Name the Puppy

Hope everyone had a great Christmas. We were just glad for everyone to be able to be together.
Here's the new puppy in her Christmas dress. She hasn't been to the groomers yet, but she's still cute. She's turning out to be more work than Peach thought. She's doing well with her though. She has to go outside and "potty" really often, and she's chewing EVERYTHING, but she's so much fun. We all laugh at her continually.
About the fleas, my sister had a similar problem, and the vet told her to bathe the puppy with blue Dawn dish detergent. We tried it, she didn't seem uncomfortable. When we soaped her little body up, the fleas all ran to her face where there was no soap. We were able to pick them off and kill them. She is cream colored so it was easy to see them. We rinsed her extra good. We haven't seen a flea since. We are watching when we bathe her though. I plan to steam the carpet when we take down our Christmas tree, Monday, just in case.
Peach still can't think of a name she likes. If you have any suggestions we'd love to hear them.

Christmas Gift with Problems

Christmas is only 2 days away! We're still making last minute preparations.
We got my daughter Peach a new puppy 2 days ago. We had to get it a little early.
She, (the puppy) is a 12 week old toy poodle.
She's as cute as can be, but she has fleas!
Every spray, shampoo, or flea collar we've found, is for dogs 6 months and older.
Have any advise, suggestions, or home remedies? I'd appreciate it, if you'd leave a comment, and I know the puppy would too.

We're reading a really cute book from 1910 called The Hollow Tree Snowed-In Book. By Albert Bigelow Paine
There's a storyteller, and a little girl He calls "the little lady". He tells her stories of the old black crow, the opossum, and the racoon who live in the branches of the old hollow tree.
They have many adventures, and tell each other funny stories, all while being snowed in with Mr. Dog, Squirrel, Turtle, Rabbit, and Mr. Robin in the old Hollow Tree.
It's especially good to read for winter or Christmas. You can read the book online at The Internet Archive. There's a short review of the book here.

The Best Christmases

There's something to that I think. It's more fun playing games, opening gifts, watching a movie, going to church, or even having Christmas dinner, if we all do it together. So let's be sociable, pleasant, & easy going this Christmas, and maybe it'll turn out to be one of the best Christmases we've had in a while.

2. I've been cleaning and decorating my home.

4. I always eat a little too much around the holidays.

6. Are you in a hurry for the holiday season to end? Take time to spend with the loved ones you do have this year.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to a family dinner, tomorrow my plans include cleaning for Christmas vacation that begins next week and Sunday, I want to See a good Christmas play, but I don't know where one is so I'll just go to church!
Maybe they'll sing Christmas songs. (On second thought I'd have to play them) never mind!

Share your blessings. Not only financial ones, but those that matter, like your time.

Spend a few minutes reading a child a Christmas book, or play a game.

Don't forget to spend time with the adults in your own household too. Play a game, sit and talk, share a Christmas movie, drink some hot chocolate.

Share the blessing of time with those around you this Christmas. Take time to savor the moments. Look at that husband or wife, son or daughter. They won't be exactly like this next Christmas. Take it all in, and spend some time together, make some memories.

What's Cooking Wednesday

Shannon over at Tales from the Fairy Blogmother is hosting What's Cooking Wednesday Go check out her Marinated Philly Cheese Squares, and other great recipes. Here's mine.

This is a warm comfort food that's as easy as pie to make. My cousin gave me the recipe. We call it "Tator Chip Surprise". Probably 'cause we're just country folk. You can add your favorite vegetable, and you've got a meal.

Tator Chip Surprise

1 lb. of ground beef
1 10 3/4 oz. can of cream of mushroom soup
1 10 3/4 oz. can of cream of chicken soup
1 can of water
8 oz. pkg of shredded cheddar cheese
about half of a package of tortilla chips

Preheat oven to 350*. Brown the ground beef in a skillet. Add two soups, and one can of water to meat. Crush tortilla chips in a 11x9 in. casserole dish. Cover the bottom well with the chips. Pour meat mixture over the chip layer in casserole dish. Bake for about 30 min. Then sprinkle cheese over the top. Pop it back in the oven for about 5 min. Let cool, and dig in.

Great Joy

I love the Christmas Story found in Luke chapter 2. I remember we used to have a Christmas singing at school. We got to wear big white collars with red bows, and one lucky kid would get to read Luke chapter 2 in front of all the parents and school. It was a big deal.

And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she sould be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

I especially like verse 10. When you realize what God did for us when He sent his son. It brings joy. Truly Christmas is about joy, and yes it is about the gift. The gift of Jesus to us.

The Christmas Season

Well the Christmas season is here. I'm trying to change my blog to a Christmas background I like. The backgrounds I'm finding are cute, but I'm having a hard time tweaking my font colors etc.

We haven't put up our tree, but we plan to soon. I'm busy moving things around so we can put it in the best possible spot. Where ever that is. LOL We've been listening to Christmas music though, and watching Christmas shows, and movies.

We had a great Thanksgiving. LOTS of food. I hope your season of celebrating went well. May the Christmas season be blessed with lots of prosperity and hope, and don't forget, Jesus is the reason for the season.

Mispronunciations

Mispronunciations. We all do it. We love to hear Fizz talk. He says the cutest things. Like once recently in Burger King, He offered his sister a “ring-a-ring” (onion ring). We hadn't even realized that's what he called them until he said that.

The latest one was at the table. We play a game we made up called “The Movie Game”. To play, someone starts by saying, “ I'm thinking of someone from the movie.....” Then the other players try to guess who it is.

It was Peach's turn, and she was thinking of someone from the movie, “The Jungle Book.” We were all guessing, when Fizz said, “Oh I know!. It's Balloon the Bear!” Peach said, “Balloon the Bear?” and He said, “Well that's what I said, Balloon the Bear.”

Needless to say, we all got a BIG kick from that. He can be such a hoot! I'm sure we'll all start saying that now. He's quite the trend setter around here.

Thankful Thursday

Like Iris, I miss my Dad. He too was called away early, and suffered a lot. He was a good Christian, and a very gentle quiet person. He left seven daughters when he went to meet Mom.

Everyone has a purpose here on this earth. We must learn to trust God, and do good. Solomon said, .....Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. Ecc.12:13
The two greatest commandments according to Matt. 22:37-40 are

1. to love God, and
2. to love your neighbor as yourself.

I'm thankful that we will all be together again someday. There, we'll never be separated again. No suffering, no goodbye's. We'll finally be where we belong, but while we're here, let's do all we can for those around us. Encouraging, loving, meeting needs where we can. Let's take advantage of the open doors, stand in awe of the mysteries of life. Trust God to lead us all the way through to the end, and don't forget to enjoy the journey.
